Diagnosis of IC
A cystoscopy, also called an endoscopy, cystopanedoscopy, or cystourethroscopy, is an outpatient surgery that is done under local anesthetic. The procedure is done with a very thin tube including a camera on the end. While being examined, the bladder is filled iwth a sterile fluid or water in order to stretch the walls of the bladder. A light is attached to the instrument so that the inside of the bladder is illuminated. The procedure allows physicians to visualization of the inside of the bladder and the urethra. If a patient does in fact have the disease, a cystoscopy will reveal the hallmark sign of the disorder--tiny red marks that represent pinpoint hemorrhages in the bladder wall. A further biopsy may be performed in order to check for swelling of the lining tissue and destruction of the muscle layer.
